Our ‘Alot-Plot’

Last year, we decided to totally transform a piece of land (just under an acre) situated behind the nursery (walk past the main entrance and keep going and you’ll find it).

Since then we have been working hard to create a ‘model allotment’ to inspire and encourage our customers to get the ‘grow your own’ bug and see how easy it is to grow your own food from scratch. We’ve made good progress in developing the land into an attractive and productive allotment. It is doing so well that we’ve sold most of what we’ve grown in the farm shop here - how about that for low carbon footprint from farm to shop!

The allotment demonstrates most of the opportunities that are available to an allotment gardener from vegetable plots to a chicken run. We wanted our customers to see that they could select the types of activity that appealed to them and fitted in with their own garden size and just go for it. 9 times out of 10, it is a question of planting up, watering and enjoying the results (with chickens being  the exception!).

We now have an allotment that includes a potting shed, greenhouse, raised beds, seating areas, chickens, an orchard and even a golf putting area. All our customers are very welcome to come up and  wander round, ask questions and see how easy it can be.

The Alot-Plot is worked on by a group of willing volunteers of all ages who give up their time in return for a rewarding session in the allotment and, of course, they get to take home the spoils of their hard work. If you’d like to get involved, please ask Dave or Diana.
